Local Leadership with the 2030 Agenda

On September 25, 2015, the most important General Assembly of the United Nations in decades took place. The minutes of that meeting would determine the direction of the actions necessary to address the challenges of the 21st century, so that our planet and our societies achieve sustainability. The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was born.

On the seventh anniversary of its resolution, we celebrate the progress and transformations that different nations and territories are promoting to fulfill the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, and we join the urgency to continue working towards their achievement in the time we have left. The changes required by the 2030 Agenda cannot be made overnight; on the contrary, they demand a chain of cross-cutting actions that modify the economic, social, and environmental paradigms, adapting to the circumstances of each territory.

Since then, the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces has launched a transformative commitment in all its areas of action, extending it to all Local Entities, Provincial Councils, Island Councils, and Insular Councils that are part of it. The greatest milestones so far have been the creation of the SDG and 2030 Agenda Commission, which coordinates institutional activities on the matter; and the Network of Local Entities for the 2030 Agenda, which promotes its implementation and localization in our country. Two lines of local action that articulate the work that Local Entities carry out to achieve the 169 targets that make up the Sustainable Development Goals, in collaboration with social agents, the business sector, and the Third Sector.

The Network, which emerged during the months of confinement due to the COVID-19 pandemic, has become the project with the most associated Entities of the FEMP, with nearly 500 Local Entities affiliated throughout the Spanish territory, 20 Observer Partners and 5 Collaborating Partners, representing more than 26 million inhabitants (26,204,459). A project that continues to grow and that celebrates its III General Assembly in Barcelona on November 15 and 16, a meeting to tell the world that, without local action, the 2030 Agenda will not be possible. To reach the entire territory and consolidate the SDGs, we have launched a website, where we reflect our progress and activities, which Local Entities continue to join. Seven years have passed since the approval of the Agenda; we have eight more ahead. Let us walk together towards the SDGs, because 2030 is not the future: it is now.
