Chiclana leads local action towards the 2030 Agenda: Workshop on Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development

Chiclana City Council hosted the workshop “Applying the Policy Coherence for Sustainable Development approach at local level in the process of implementing the 2030 Agenda”, organised by the FEMP’s Network of Local Entities for the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda.

The event began with remarks by the Mayor of Chiclana, José María Román, who highlighted the municipality’s progress in sustainable development, emphasising its strategic plan aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). At the opening, Paula Fernández-Wulff, Director-General for the 2030 Agenda at the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumer Affairs and the 2030 Agenda, also took part, underscoring the importance of local action in implementing the SDGs.

During the workshop, the concept of policy coherence for sustainable development was explained, highlighting its key role in aligning local strategies with the 2030 Agenda. This approach helps avoid duplication and conflicts between policies, promoting more integrated and effective models.

Technical representatives, political representatives and members of civil society took part in collaborative activities to identify common barriers to implementing coherence systems. Among the challenges identified were the need to strengthen political leadership on the 2030 Agenda and to combat misinformation that hinders public understanding of the importance of the SDGs.

Within the Network of Local Entities for the 2030 Agenda for sustainable development, specific tools are being developed to facilitate this alignment and the coherence approach in local and provincial public policies. In addition, work is being promoted on the preparation of Voluntary Local Reviews, which will enable Local Entities to report their progress to the United Nations in the coming years, reinforcing the global commitment to sustainable development.
