The UN Directors’ Meeting in Bilbao was marked by the crucial issue of localizing the 2030 Agenda. The seminar provided a unique platform to share experiences and perspectives from the Spanish example of a whole-of-society and whole-of-government approach to localizing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Network has undertaken actions aimed at promoting and expanding knowledge, awareness and implementation of the SDGs by strengthening institutions and engaging local stakeholders.

Spain as a leading player in localizing the 2030 Agenda

Spain, strongly committed to the 2030 Agenda, is emerging as a leader in SDG localization, as evidenced by hosting the Secretariat of the Local2030 Coalition in Bilbao.

One of the Network’s main successes lies in the fact that the 2030 Agenda goes “from local to global”, from where people can be engaged, as well as other broader spheres.

Reflections from the seminar

The seminar addressed a range of perspectives, from the Spanish Government’s national and international experience to contributions from regional governments, autonomous communities, provincial councils and city councils.

FEMP’s Secretary General is committed to developing a common strategy aligned with the 2030 Agenda SDGs, a common working framework based on five pillars (planet, people, peace, prosperity and partnerships), and strengthening the commitment to advance from the local level in achieving the SDGs.

Conclusions and next steps

The closing of the event provided a platform to reflect on the experiences shared and discuss the next steps in collaboration with the Local2030 Coalition.
