The day began today at Palma Activa with a Balearic meeting of local entities for the 2030 Agenda, attended by about thirty representatives.

The City Hall’s plenary hall hosted the first in-person meeting of the Governing Council of the network of local entities for the 2030 Agenda, organized by the FEMP

Hila: “We are committed to the Sustainable Development Goals and work with enthusiasm to achieve them by sharing experiences, training, and ensuring that City Councils, Provincial Councils, Island Councils, and Insular Councils are taken into account when discussing SDGs.”

Palma, October 1, 2021.- Palma today hosted the meeting of the Governing Council of the network of local entities for the 2030 Agenda, which is held periodically and organized by the Spanish Federation of Municipalities and Provinces (FEMP), bringing together up to 355 Local Governments.

The Mayor of Palma, José Hila, who is president of the network of local entities for the 2030 Agenda, chaired the Governing Council, which was held in person in the plenary hall and was attended by various mayors, presidents of Provincial Councils from different cities such as Elda (Alicante), Onda (Castellón), Pontevedra Provincial Council, Torrejoncillo (Cáceres), Villarramiel (Palencia), Albacete Provincial Council, representatives of the Secretary of State for the 2030 Agenda, as well as FEMP members and mayors who were able to participate remotely.

Attendees discussed various organizational points, such as the creation of working groups for the Sustainable Development Goals of the 2030 Agenda, among others.

Hila highlighted the importance of Palma hosting the network’s first in-person meeting. “We represent the territory and work with enthusiasm to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. We share experiences, train our technicians and politicians, and work to ensure that we, as city councils, are taken into account when discussing SDGs in Europe,” he said.

Nuria Simón, first vice-president of the network of entities and mayor of Villaramiel, emphasized that municipalities implement bottom-up policies that help understand and convey the 2030 Agenda. “These are cross-cutting policies that must be extended to the entire population,” she said.

Rubén Alfaro, second vice-president of the network and mayor of Elda, stressed that the triumph of the 2030 Agenda will come if it is promoted by Local Governments. “The challenge of promoting the 2030 Agenda will be met if we, as municipalities, are capable of promoting it from a small municipality to a capital,” he said, recalling the breadth of the 17 SDGs.

Meeting with Balearic entities for the 2030 Agenda

In addition to this Governing Council meeting, this morning Palma Activa hosted a meeting with Balearic entities that are part of the 2030 Agenda, attended by the mayors of the Balearic Islands.

This meeting, chaired by the Mayor of Palma, José Hila, included interventions by the Director General of Institutional Relations and Local Cooperation, Francesc Miralles, the Director General of Organization and Resources of the FEMP, Mª Eugenia Simarro, and the Secretary General of the Federation of Local Entities of the Balearic Islands, Neus Serra.
